It’s hard not to catch a vibe or feel the beautiful energy from Korea without even being there. The music (K-pop, K-ballad, especially the OSTs), dramas, fashion sense, beauty products, food and the handsome “oppas”.

Even if you can’t read in Hangul, you’ve never been to Hanguk or you’re new to the K-world, these are surely words you are familiar with.



1. Gwaenchana (It is alright)


That word we say to comfort people around us or tell them that no matter what bullsh*t they put us through, we don’t have a choice other than to forgive them. Gwaenchana, you evil one.


2. Gajima (Don’t go)


This word makes me want to drag all my oppa deul by the ear and tell them to stay unmarried till I find the plane ticket to Seoul.  Your love is about leave you and breakfast seems inevitable? Save that relationship with “gajima”.

3. Aigoo (Aigoo, osumi in Yoruba)


This is my personal favourite. The current state of UAR is enough to frustrate me into saying this every millisecond. Not even with this strike and everything that has been impeding my school life. Aigoo.

4. Wae (Why?)


So I have to keep spending my own money on foods I eat? Everywhere I go current or savings. Wae? Wae?

5. Na ga


Toxic relationships? Headaches from school or work? Annoying best friend? Sapa? Those are the things you need to preach those words to because they really need to get out. I can’t hear you shouting and sending out the negativities with na ga.

9. Bogoshipeo (I miss you)


I miss you. There’s a way this is said with so much longing in ones voice that you can’t help but feel every note. It also means “I want to see you”, the very word I say everyday to the Korean foods I want to eat when I get to go to Kwangya (a safe space for NCTzens).
