On Sunday, the 26th of June, 2022, the 22nd annual ceremony of the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards took place in Los Angeles at the Microsoft Theater.
With a variety of awards from several categories and with the best talents around the globe up for nominations as well, Tems and Wizkid have once again brought great honour to Nigerians and their many fans around the world.

Temilade Openiyi, more popularly known as Tems, will now go down in history as the first Nigerian and African woman to win the Best International Act at the BET award and that is no small feat. She won the award which had her up against some of the very best from countries such as the UK, France, Congo, Brazil, and South Africa. It should be known that Tems was also nominated for the award of the New Best Artist alongside Baby Keem, Benny the Butcher, Latto, Muni Long, and Yung Bleu. The award was won by Latto.

With the same energy and at the same event, Tems also bagged an award with Wizkid for the Best Collaboration in Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ from his album “Made in Lagos” which also featured Justin Bieber. In addition, Wizkid was nominated for the Best male R&B/pop artist alongside other artistes including Blxst, Chris Brown, Givēon, Lucky Daye, The Weekend and Yung Bleu.
Even though the award was won by the Weekend, Wizkid’s and Tems‘ win at the BET Awards is still a great win for the music industry in Nigeria.
On receiving her award, Tems dedicated it to women.
“It’s an honour… I mean, this is my first award show that I’m winning something and I just want to use this as an opportunity to speak to every single young, old, whatever, every single woman watching this, every single girl watching this at home. Where I’m from, things like this don’t happen.”
