Sailing links: No woman can come between me and my best friend

In this category, we give you the gist of relationships that are thriving among lovers, sisters, brothers, best friends, etc.

For this edition, we interviewed two best friends, Peter (20) and Obinna (20). They’ve been friends for over 10 years and it’s beautiful to see such brotherly love. Join us as we walk through their journey of friendship.

How did your friendship start?

Obinna: It started in our elementary school but we weren’t too close until our junior high school.

Peter: Yes, we knew each other from the same primary school. We both lived in the same area which made us see each other every morning we went to school.

What made you guys become close?

Obinna: If I’m being precise, we got close when I started taking care of him. Moreover, he is a crazy guy and I like crazy people. I’ve never told him this but I looked up to him as a kid.

Peter: We shared a lot of things in common like attending the same school, living in the same environment, and going to the same church and I guess that drew us closer. We became close later on and he found out I was asthmatic. He always came to check up on me at home and sometimes stayed for a while till we left for church together. Like he said. He was always there to take care of me and my mum liked him a lot.

Why did your mum like him a lot?

Peter: I believe it’s because he was my only friend that showed good friendship qualities. She saw the way he used to visit me after school to play with me and cheer me up when I wasn’t okay. She didn’t see him as a bad influence on me so she naturally liked him.

Obinna: Yes, I was a very good friend.

What do you love about each other?

Obinna: I love that he always makes me want to be a better version of myself.

Peter: I love that he understands me and is always there for me. He’s a giver and he loves seeing his loved ones grow. He is not lazy and he has big ambitions like I do.

Obinna: In addition to what I said, I love him because he’s just as crazy as I am.

Peter: Relax man, I’m not a man of love.

Have you ever exchanged “I love you” with each other?

Peter: Yeah. Stylishly but not directly.

Obinna: I’m not gay.

Peter: Yeah, guys don’t say that to each other. We have better ways of communicating it. We say it but we don’t say it, do you get it?

Obinna: Like I said, I’m not gay.

Do you guys have differences?

Peter: Yes, we do. A lot.

Obinna: I agree with that.

Have you guys ever fought over a lady?

Peter: No, it’s not worth it. Instead, we would even join hands to fight her.

Obinna: We almost fought over a lady though.

Peter: Yes, but we handled the situation well. It’s a story for another day.

How do you resolve your differences?

Obinna: Like men, we talk things out.

Peter: That’s just it. It’s women who drag out issues for a long time.

Obinna: Period.

What’s the longest time it has taken you both to settle a difference?

Peter: It took a day, I’m not too sure. I don’t waste time settling my differences with people I love.

Obinna: It was more than a day. That was the last fight we had, don’t you remember?

Peter: Oh, it lasted for over two days. Funny enough, the fight was caused by a small issue. I should have disciplined you well.

Obinna: You know I’m quite stubborn. You love me that way.

Who among the both of you is a troublemaker?

Obinna: (Silent)

Peter: His silence should have given you a cue. I’m the gentle one.

Obinna: I have nothing to say about this.

Peter: Of course, you don’t.

Will your best friend be the first person you call when a problem arises?

Obinna: What kind of problem are we talking about?

Peter: Yeah, it depends on the problem. In some cases, I might involve my parents first.

Obinna: For now, I can’t tell because it still depends on the problem.

Is there anything you’d find hard to tell your best friend about yourself?

Obinna: Nope

Peter: No

You mean there are no secrets between you two?

Obinna: It’s not about us having secrets or not. We already know the things we need to know about each other. If it’s not relevant then I don’t have to tell him except if he asks.

Peter: Exactly! You took the words right out of my mouth. I’ll give an example. If I get a new phone, I feel it’s irrelevant to tell him about it because he’s still going to find out anyway.

What is your most precious memory together?

Obinna: Presently, it’s hard to pick one because every memory I have with him is precious.

Peter: There are several memories where we’ve had fun together but I have one that shows true care and friendship. In high school, my class and Obinna’s class were punished for something we did by the school authorities. We were all told to kneel under the scorching sun.

So I planned with my classmates to fake an asthma attack to escape punishment. When I did, everyone around me panicked and a few went to get an inhaler for me. Obinna, who didn’t know of the plan, saw me from afar and rushed towards me. He was like, “Peter! Peter! What’s wrong?”

He was really worried and he tried making people keep a distance from me so I could get fresh air. He did all his best to contain the situation till I signaled to him with my eyes that it was fake. When he realized it, he was shocked but relieved that I was okay. That moment alone was crazy but it’s precious to me because it showed how much he cared for me.

Describe each other with 3 attributes.

Peter: Caring, thoughtful and fun. I could go on and on.

Obinna: He’s smart, supportive, trustworthy, caring, loyal, and honest.

Peter: These are the same words I have in my head. I guess he sees me the way I see him.

What’s your most embarrassing memory together?

Obinna: That would be the time we faked our sleep in Mrs. Sule’s car.

Peter: Mrs. Sule was our teacher in junior high school. She used to drop us off at our homes in her car after school.

Obinna: We knew she lived in the same area as we did but we didn’t know her house. That day, we were determined to know where she lived. First off, we pretended to be asleep in her car so she would take us to her place but she didn’t. So I brought up the plan to follow her car.

Peter: We got to know her home that day but we got to our homes late. There were three of us: Obinna, me, and our friend- Munonye.

Obinna: The next day, Munonye’s mum came to our homes to query us for making her son come home late.

Peter: It was embarrassing. She created a scene and the entire neighborhood came out to see her yelling at us and tagging us as a bad influence on her son.

Obinna: It was mortifying. That woman is a ruffian. I fear her.

Will you take a million dollars for a life without your best friend in it?

Obinna: No comment (runs away)

Peter: No

Obinna: That’s a very cheap question. I won’t take the money because we’ll be making more than that soon.

Peter: That was the same thing in my head. You see, great minds think alike.

Since you both have similar opinions about things, we’ve decided to test your telepathy and how much you know each other. Is that okay with you?

Obinna: We’re not X-men. It’s fine though.

Peter: Yeah, let’s give it a try.

(Both are put in separate places)

Money or Love?

Obinna: F*ck! I choose money.

Peter: Love. I feel it can bring about relationships that would help you make a lot of money. But with money, you have to worry about getting fake love from people.

Peter: Okay, Obinna. You’ve been a true friend and I really appreciate you for that. You’re the only friend that took the time to learn how to be there for me and take care of me and I’ll never forget that. We’re not ending here…we just began. See you at the top, bro.
