Ranking Our 5 Universities (UI, OAU, UNILAG, UNILORIN and FUOYE) Based On Their Library Capacities

When we talk about federal universities in Nigeria with the best libraries, there are many things to consider. Some factors such as the beauty and the structure of the library, its space, and the conducive environment some universities’ libraries better than others.

A library is also considered as best if it is well-ventilated, spacious, produces a reader with comfortability, and is well-equipped.

I have made research on some federal universities, UNIBADAN, UNILORIN, FUOYE, UNILAG, and OAU. Besides having great aesthetic structures, these university libraries have a vast number of books, study materials for readers, and a comfortable surrounding that produces ease.

1. Hezekiah Olusanmi Library, Obafemi Awolowo University.

 

OAU, formerly called the University of Ife was established in 1961. The first school library was cramped and not well-equipped. In October 1989, a new library was erected known as Hezekiah Olusanmi Library. It was named after the first Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Hezekiah Adedunmola Oluwasanmi.

The library is a four-storey tall building with a seating capacity of 2500 and a total area of 42, 000sq.ft. There is also accessibility to books and materials online.

It accommodates about 250,000 volumes of books with the library catalogues in card format. Also, the library has about 14,000 bibliographic records.

2. Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan.

 

The Kenneth Dike Library was founded in 1948, the same time the school was founded. The library was named after the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kenneth Onwuka Dike.

The library has over 700,000 volumes and seats for about 1,000 readers. The library is open to all students both undergraduates and graduates, senior staff, of both the school and staff of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, as well as Alumni of the University.

The library is known for having an African-oriented collection of materials. The library is sufficiently equipped and has been facilitated to subscribe to many electronic resources with which it can complement its print collections.

The University of Ibadan is also known to have libraries for each faculty and each department to enhance reading and research for students and their staff.

Each faculty and the departmental library is equipped with study and research materials for courses related to the departments.

3. University of Ilorin Library.

 

University of Ilorin, another well-known federal university was founded in 1975. University of Ilorin library comprises the main library, college library, and law library.

The library has a seating capacity of about 1,000 people. Hardware facilities including audio-visual and e-resources are available in UNILORIN library.

4. ATO ARCHITECTS, University of Lagos.

 

University of Lagos was founded in 1962 and is a public research university located in Lagos, Nigeria. UNILAG Library which is known as ATO Architects was commissioned in 2013.

The building is a 15-storey facility with a 500-seater auditorium. Also, it has a capacity of about 800 readers.

There is a collection of journals, reviews, and research with a large library catalogue. Besides having a well-structured and beautiful library, UNILAG also has 10 research centres.

5. Federal University, Oye Library.

 

The Federal University of Oye was established in 2011 in Ekiti state and is one of the best schools in Nigeria with more than 70 degree programs and faculties.

The school has an online library administration portal that gives students access to view ebook catalogues. The school’s digital library has other library e-resources such as Access to Global Online Research on Agriculture(AGORA), Education Resources Information Centre(ERIC), Health Internetwork Access to Research Initiative Programme (HINARI), etc.
